Long Miles Coffee began with a simple belief: that Burundi’s hills, when treated with care and intention, could produce coffees among the finest in the world. From the very beginning, our work has centered on relationships with farmers, meticulous processing, and a deep respect for place—allowing each hill and harvest day to speak for itself. This exceptional micro lot is the purest expression of that philosophy. Crafted from a single harvest day, the cherries for this coffee were hand-selected from partner farmers on Gikungare and Bumba hills, two neighboring high-elevation sites known for their cool temperatures, slow cherry maturation, and dense Bourbon beans. Only the ripest cherries were accepted, followed by careful flotation and cleaning to ensure that only the highest-quality fruit moved forward. Drying was intentionally slow and deliberate—over 30 days on raised African drying beds—using a combination of evenly layered drying and pyramid drying, with shade cloth applied when needed to protect the coffee from harsh midday sun and allow moisture to leave the seed gradually and evenly. This extended drying approach enhances the inherent character of the hills rather than overwhelming it, resulting in a coffee that is layered, refined, and expressive, showcasing the elegance and complexity that Burundi is capable of when time, patience, and precision are honored. This lot is not repeatable; it represents a single moment in the harvest, a single day’s work across two remarkable hills, and the collective effort of farmers and the Long Miles Coffee team committed to excellence at every step—a true micro lot, crafted slowly and rooted deeply in place.

Producer Story: Meet the extraordinary Donate Nduwimana, a Coffee Scout at the breathtaking Gikungere Hill. Coffee Scouts are essential to how we produce coffee in Burundi. Lending their expertise, Coffee Scouts guide farmers to understand what is needed to produce quality coffee all the way from the nursery to harvest season. Some of our neighboring producers see farmers wanting to collaborate with us, and even the government coffee board has suggested that other Burundi coffee producers could learn through adopting ideas from Long Miles, like our Coffee Scout programs. It's heartening to see our efforts making an impact in ways we never expected. _____ Meet Marie Nzokirantevye, a resilient coffee farmer on Bumba Hill. At 70, she carries the weight of a tumultuous past marked by war and loss. In 1996, Marie fled with her children, never knowing her husband's fate when he went in search of food. Now, their coffee plantation, once tended by him, stands as a testament to their shared dreams. With 150 trees, Marie and her children cultivate the land, weaving love and unity into their existence. Her children rally around, honoring their father's legacy and their mother's enduring spirit. In the quiet hills, Marie's story unfolds—a tale of hardship, resilience, and unwavering strength.
